Powell delivers for father and boss

It was a day to remember as he won for his trainer-father Brendan on Dark And Dangerous as well as two for his boss Colin Tizzard with Ohio Gold and Drawn Free.

“He’s a very honest little horse and he’ll stay all day. He’s done nothing wrong and he didn’t give him a bad ride,” Powell senior told At The Races.

“He’s a very straightforward horse and the lad had a word with AP (McCoy), who said to make plenty of use of him.

“It’s the owner’s dream to maybe go for something like a Fred Winter (at Cheltenham) later in the season. He’s a tough, hardy horse and seems to cope with any ground.”

Ohio Gold (4-9) was Powell’s easiest winner as he landed the odds in great fashion in the Yes Promo Products “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle.

Riding with utmost confidence, Powell pushed last month’s Folkestone winner into a clear lead three out. It was a matter of how far he would win after that as he negotiated the final two obstacles safely to score by 22 lengths from Isleofhopendreams with Solaise Express another 16 lengths away in third.

Drawn Free (17-2) brought up his threesome in the GE White & Sons Agricultural Buildings Handicap Hurdle with a three-and-a-quarter-length call over the favourite Missionaire.

Another father-son combination, that of trainer Gary Moore and 5lb claiming conditional Joshua, struck with Reblis (13-2) in the Derek Hunnisett OBE Memorial Handicap Chase. Reblis turned this three-and-a-quarter-mile slog into a procession, bounding clear from the third-last fence to win by 11 lengths from Its A Classic with Ballinhassig 24 lengths back in third.

Spear Thistle (5-1) turned over hot-pot Cucumber Run after a thrilling finish to the three-runner Broadfeed Remembering Manhattan Boy Novices’ Chase.

Those two had the race to themselves from the fourth last and it was nip and tuck with Dave Crosse getting Charlie Mann’s runner home by a head from the 1-4 shot. They pulled 36 lengths clear of Lady Willa.

Weighing-room veteran Andrew Thornton got on the scoresheet thanks to Hazy Bay (12-1) in the Follow Us On Twitter @starsportsbet-bet Handicap Hurdle.

The Michael Roberts-trained six-year-old, last seen wining over the course and distance in February, gained the upper hand over Chicharito at the final flight to win by six lengths.

Joint bottom weight Goring Two (16-1) was a smooth winner of the sussexfx.co.uk Handicap Chase in the hands of 3lb claimer Marc Goldstein.

Taking over from top weight and favourite Free Speech before three out, Anna Newton-Smith’s six-year-old was not hard pressed to beat Oscar Charlie by seven lengths.

David Pipe has earmarked next month’s Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham as a likely target for Dynaste.

The bold jumping grey tried to make all in the Lough Derg Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot at the weekend, with Dynaste appearing to be a serious danger to Big Buck’s before the champion picked up in his usual impressive style.

Dynaste paid for his early exertions and faded into fourth but Pipe was satisfied with his first outing in Grade One company.

“Dynaste picked up nearly £4,000 for finishing fourth in the Long Walk Hurdle and I thought that he produced a decent effort,” Pipe said.

“He was ridden forcefully and produced some prodigious leaps and just for a moment after three out, I thought that he might have Big Buck’s in a bit of trouble.

“However, as is so often the case, Big Buck’s found extra and powered away – Dynaste faded into fourth in the straight but showed more than enough to suggest that he warranted his place in this company.

“By being ridden positively and trying to make a race of it with Big Buck’s, it has probably cost us second place, although you have to have a go – if you go into a race with a view to finishing second, then you are beaten before you even start.

“Dynaste could go now for the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham, although as illustrated by his fluent jumping, it is easy to see why we are so excited about him as a prospective novice chaser.”
