Prestigious Lincoln title goes to Thwaites

YORKSHIRE cycling ace Scott Thwaites secured the biggest victory of his career when the Endura Racing rider from Burley-in-Wharfedale won the prestigious Lincoln Grand Prix yesterday.

Thwaites sprinted home clear of his rivals to win the 56th edition of the 88-mile event, which takes in 11 climbs of the steep Michaelgate climb through the heart of the historic city.

The 21-year-old had been in the decisive break with more experienced team-mates Rob Partridge and Dave Clarke, and was set to work to help his colleagues to take the victory.

But he found himself third as they headed into the final corner, and after turning on the power he overtook two Motorpoint rivals and crossed the line first on the packed cobbles outside the city’s Cathedral.

“This was totally unexpected,” he said afterwards. “I felt quite good and got in the break and with that I thought it was job done.

“I listened to what the guys said before the race and stayed at the front and that worked out for me.”

In time-trialling, Hull rider Joel Wainman won the Barton Wheelers 10-mile event in Lincolnshire, clocking 20min 59sec to win by 15 seconds from Scunthorpe Poly CC duo Anthony Nash and Martin Pitchford.
