Promotion for Yorkshire's tennis teams

THE Aegon Summer County Cup ended in promotion for both Yorkshire teams, with the men finishing as Group Two champions at Cromer, and the women moving up from Group Four at West Worthing.

Yorkshire men beat Norfolk 6-3, Derbyshire 6-3, Sussex 6-3 and Dorset 6-3, their only defeat being against East of Scotland 5-4.

Team captain Steve McLoughlin praised the spirit of his pool of players – Mike Tolman, Joe Gill, Josh Gledden, Elliot Chang, Kyle Brassington, Ben Gudzelak, Doug Keen and Ben Atkinson.

"The fact that we won three matches from 2-1 down after the first round indicates how hard the lads fought," said McLoughlin. "It feels good to be back in the premier group next year."

Chang and Brassington, who won 12 out of 15 rubbers, were Yorkshire's most successful pair.

Yorkshire women had a new captain, Melissa Roach, who led a pool of players completed by Carina Dalton, Verity Roach, Jo Craven, Linsey Jacks, Laura Oldham, Katie Jessop, Megan O'Sullivan and Nicole Peterson.

The team made an uneasy start by losing 6-3 to Norfolk, but recovered splendidly to beat West of Scotland 7-2, Avon 6-3, Nottinghamshire 5-4 and North Wales 7-2.

"I was only appointed captain about a month before County Week and it was great not only to lead a winning side but play in 15 rubbers," said Roach. "The key match was against previously unbeaten Notts , which was close. But we all pulled together and are delighted to be on the way up again."
