Record protected by dominant men
squash: Nick Matthew insisted England got their just rewards after landing the double at the European Team Championships in Finland.
The 30-year-old, from Sheffield, – now into his fifth month as the world No 1 – helped the men’s team overcome France in Saturday’s final, while Harrogate’s Jenny Duncalf was part of the women’s team which took gold after defeating the Netherlands.
It was England’s 19th successive win in the men’s event.
“People think that we just need to show up and win,” said Matthew. “It’s not that easy. These are top players we’re playing against.
“We’re very proud of England’s record and tradition.”
The women’s team returned to winning ways after losing in last year’s semi-finals following 32 successive title successes.
