Round-Up: Muru’s accuracy topples Keighley

Yorkshire One: Driffield consolidated their lead with a 33-14 home win over third-placed Heath, running in five tries for a bonus which put them clear of Bridlington, who were previously level on points.

An even first half saw Driffield go ahead with a try by centre Tom Wright, converted by Lee Birch.

Heath equalised before half-time, but the Woldsmen went clear with further tries by winger Sam Furbank (two), flanker Sam Havler and Tom Wright’s second.

Jamie Muru’s goal kicking earned Bridlington a 19-11 home win over Keighley, both sides scoring one try.

Muru’s three first-half penalties put the home side 9-0 ahead at the break. Keighley stand-off Danny McGhee pulled back a drop goal, and he and Muru exchanged penalties before Bridlington second-row James Thompson touched down for a try which Muru converted.

Then, Keighley winger Sam Walker raced over.

York moved up to fourth place with a 32-13 home victory over Knottingley.

Centre Peter Martin scored two of York’s five tries, with second-row forwards Chris Fox and Jim Mulroney and hooker Jack Buxton also touching down.

Despite the visitors salvaging a losing bonus point, Pocklington moved ahead of their rivals into sixth place with a 19-14 home win over Scarborough.

Scarborough had taken the lead with a penalty by fly-half Tom Harrison before Pocklington full-back Nick Bennett sliced through for a try which he converted.

Pocklington were pressing the Scarborough line when, with the last play of the first half, the visitors intercepted and Australian winger Rob James ran 80 yards to score, giving Scarborough an 8-7 lead against the run of play.

Pocklington regained control with tries by hooker Ben Stephenson and centre Tim Nixon, one converted by Bennett, before Scarborough reduced the arrears with two late penalties by Harrison.

Pontefract, who are now above local rivals Castleford and Knottingley, came from behind for a 24-17 home win over Dinnington, who were left to salvage yet another losing bonus point.

Yorkshire Two: Barnsley gave their title hopes a major boost when they beat Moortown 71-17 with an 11-try victory at Shaw Lane.

Centre Arron Gaunt scored a hat-trick of tries in the victory, and others came from prop Adam Smith, No 8 David Reed, right winger Andrew SMith, stand-off Patrick Jenson, full-back Andrew Appleyard, flanker Neil Robinson, centre Andrew Buckingham and scrum-half Neil Francis.

Leodiensians held their lead over Barnsley with a four-try bonus in their 35-18 victory at Doncaster Phoenix.

Doncaster took the initiative with a try by No 8 Nick Burns, which Ben Millar converted as well as landing a drop goal to put the home side 10-0 ahead at half time.

But they ran out of steam as Leos gained control with tries from centres Simon Worrall and Matt Callaghan, winger Mark Winter and stand-off James Henry, the latter also kicking three conversions, two drop goals and a penalty.

Scrum-half Joe Watts scored for Phoenix in the second half, when Millar added a penalty.

West Park Leeds battled back from a 15-3 deficit against Wath to beat the visitors 27-15. Left winger Ali Booth scored a hat-trick of tries in the victory.

Bradford Salem scraped an 18-17 victory at Selby and West Leeds ran out 19-7 winners over Skipton.

Yorkshire Three: Roundhegians pulled clear at the top with a 32-5 victory at Baildon.

Roundhegians dominated in the forwards, going ahead with first-half tries by flanker Kyle Sutcliffe (two), prop Matthew Loughney and centre Tom Smith. Alex Jones converted three and added two second-half penalties.

Sheffield Medicals slipped from second to fifth when, after opening an 8-0 interval lead, they were beaten 29-15 at home to Rotherham Phoenix.

Medicals took the lead with a penalty by Eddie Farmer and a try by centre Michael Watters.

Rotherham fought back to collect a four-try bonus with two from centre Matt Allott and others from full-back John Ross and second-row James Mallender, the latter sharing the kicking with Tom Jenkinson.

Medicals’ consolation in the second half was a late try by Farmer, which he converted.

Aireborough moved ahead of their rivals with a 14-6 home win over Thornensians. The home side edged in front 6-0 at half-time with two of Chris Wray’s three penalties, and No 8 Luke Exley touched down for a try in the 60th minute.

Hessle, seeking their first win, went 3-0 up against Burley before slipping to a 10-3 defeat.
