NORTH ONE EASTOld Crossleyans 13 Old Brodleians 20THE derby spoils went Old Brodleians’ way, but the table-toppers had to work hard. Brods have made an unbeaten start to the season, in contrast to their neighbours and everything went according to the script at first as captain and No 8 Luke Scrimshaw crashed his way over and Dan Wood slotted a conversion. Old Crossleyans pulled back three points on the half-hour before xpansive play in the backs saw the home side take the lead, when winger Joe Baker went over and full-back Leigh Thomas added the two points. The visitors were back in front soon after the interval, hooker Rob Jennings finishing off powerful forward play to make it 13-10, only for Thomas to level the scores with another penalty. But neat play by the forwards allowed Scrimshaw space to cross for his second, with Wood converting to seal the win.

But once again Malton responded in style, first with winger Tom Newitt and than Piawi himself touching down, as well as kicking both conversions.

The hosts got their noses in front three minutes after the break when Collins converted Matthew Poste’s try. He added two more penalties on 64 and 68 minutes.

But Sheffield were forced to hang on and, after Byron Elliott went over for the visitors, Townsley was unable to slot the conversion.

After Jinks had put his side ahead again, the first try came for the home side in the 38th minute when Robert Bellerby powered over to make it 8-6 to the home side.

Some good team work saw prop Matthew Helm crash over for a try after 52 minutes, Campbell landing the conversion. Jinks pulled back another penalty for the visitors two minutes later, but then from an interception on the halfway line Bellerby raced over for his second try, Campbell again adding the points.

Scrum-half Peter Wright ran in a further try to complete their scoring, and right at the end of the match, after Middlesbrough hooker Richard Horton had been yellow carded, Morpeth’s winger Les Allen found a gap in the home defence to reduce the deficit.

Cleckheaton came away from the North East empty-handed after coming up against a stubborn Gateshead side.

David Tate put the hosts 6-0 ahead with two penalties before the visitors edged into the lead when Ross Hayden converted his own try.

Indiscipline cost the visitors dearly in the second half, as the hosts proved to have the edge in scoring the winning try.
