Anderson sad to see Hughes leave Giants

HUDDERSFIELD Giants head coach Paul Anderson admits being “disappointed” that ever-present loan player Jack Hughes has turned them down for Warrington Wolves in 2016.

The England Knights second-row has been on a season-long loan deal from Wigan Warriors and played 25 games for the Fartowners, starting all but one, scoring four tries.

Hughes, 23, had the option of making the move permanent but, instead, has chosen to join Warrington on a two-year deal.

Anderson said: “Jack’s been good for us this year.

“If I’m being honest I’m disappointed he’s leaving after we gave him an opportunity but I understand the reasons why.

“It opens an opportunity up for us as a club; we’ve some good young players here and we need to make sure we give them a chance, like we did with Jack.

“He’ll still give 100 per cent, he knows what I think of him as a player and he’s rewarded himself by staying in our team due to his performances.

“We were looking for someone to play on our right edge and it was great to get him - we tried to bring him in the past and it’s worked out well for both parties now.

“We’re the losers now, though, because we’ve got someone ready for someone else.

“But the travel has got a little bit too much for him in the end, and Warrington are a good club.”

Hughes will link up with fellow new recruits Australian star Kurt Gidley and Hull FC winger Tom Lineham ahead of next season and Wolves head coach Tony Smith is excited to work with a player who won a Grand Final against Warrington with hometown Wigan in 2013.

“He’s a terrific young British player and I have a lot of time for Jack,” he said.

“He has had a very, very good year. He’s a big, strapping lad who has a strong desire to play for our club and I think he’s got a really healthy future.

“He is a potential England representative in the near future and we are hoping to help him on that route to achieve this.

“I think he’s going to play a really big role in our future and will give us a lot of depth in our back row, as well as his versatility to play in the backs.”
