Barrow Raiders 50 Sheffield Eagles 4: Sheffield slump to heavy Barrow loss

SHEFFIELD Eagles were shot down by resurgent Championship champions Barrow as they fell to a heavy defeat in Cumbria.

The home side ran in a half-century of points as they won their first home game of the league campaign, with Sheffield having only Mitchell Stringer's try to show for the visitors' efforts.

Zeb Luisi opened things up for the Raiders on 10 minutes as he picked up James Coyle's grubber, but there was a quick response from the Eagles as Stringer rolled over three tacklers to cut the gap to 6-4.

That was the last time Mark Aston's men threatened, however, and before the break Liam Harrison, Anthony Blackwood, Jermaine McGillvary and Jamie Rooney had all gone in to open up a 28-4 lead.

There was more of the same from the hosts after the interval, with Andy Ballard starting them off with an interception effort from his own 10-metre line.

New signing Matt James crossed for the next, with Paul Noone and Michael Knowles rounding things off for the Raiders as they brought up the half-century with time to spare.

The defeat was Sheffield's heaviest of the season and means they have won just one of their five league games thus far.
