Batley Bulldogs 40 Huddersfield Giants 12: Young Giants finally ravaged as Bulldogs continue build-up

Batley wingmen Johnny Campbell and Lee Greenwood collected five tries between them after the Bulldogs finally outflanked a determined display by Huddersfield's under-20 squad.

Campbell's well-deserved hat-trick included two first-half touchdowns which enabled the Bulldogs to build a slight interval lead while his third, demonstrating his evasiveness and speed, added the final fillip to a late Batley romp.

Two tries in the late rush were scored by fellow winger Greenwood, who fed off the slick passing and inch-perfect kicking of stand-off Paul Handforth to outwit the Giants' hard-working defence.

Batley's other tries came from hard-running centre Danny Maun, who opened the scoring in the third minute and substitute Mark Cunningham, who showed great strength to power over late in the game.

The young Giants, however, earned the accolade of assistant coach Paul Anderson, who said the squad had only had three sessions together before the game.

"They proved to be quick learners and showed they were willing to put their bodies on the line," said Anderson.

Their first try was engineered by scrum-half Greg McNally, who completely wrong-footed defenders with a change of direction before sending Kieran Murphy over the line.

Minutes later, McNally engineered an opening for determined hooker Joe Parkinson to exploit and score between the sticks. McNally converted both tries.

The young Giants posed few dangers during the second half but their challenging defensive work was finally overcome by Batley's greater experience and forward power.
