Bradford Bulls must cut out the mistakes, warns Potter

PRAGMATIC Bradford coach Mick Potter accepted last night that his side will not be able to challenge the likes of WIgan until they eradicate needless mistakes.

They were vanquished 44-10 at Odsal by the reigning Super League champions although Wigan were given a helping hand by the amount of ball Bradford turned over in a sloppy first period.

Poor handling gifted the visitors the majority of their eight tries overall and Potter admitted: “We have got to be a bit more resilient with the ball.

“We make a bundle of errors, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves.

“The score probably didn’t reflect the toughness of it but Wigan are a good team.

“If you have a lapse any time they’ll put points on you which is good for them.

“There is a gap and Wigan are at the top of the pile. They have some quality international personnel and they came up with some fantastic plays but we need to be better than that.

“We need to improve but know we can.”

His side – 26-0 down at half-time – did fare far better after the break with tries from Elliott Whitehead and Patrick Ah Van narrowing the deficit to just 16 points before the champions notched some late efforts.

Bradford, with eight players making home debuts, were understandably patchy at times especially given they were without half-backs Marc Herbert and Kyle Briggs.

Wigan, meanwhile, prepared perfectly for their World Club Challenge with St George-Illawarra, bouncing back from the disappointment of only drawing with St Helens last Saturday.

“It was very pleasing, especially after last week,” said coach Michael Maguire. “It was good to see the boys doing what they are capable of doing.

“We will get a lot of confidence out of that.”

They lost centre Martin Gleeson with a hamstring injury after 26 minutes but Maguire expects him to line up against the Dragons.

“He could feel it tightening up so it was largely precautionary,” he said. “From what I’ve been told by the doctor, it looks like it’s pretty good news.”
