Bulldogs facing daunting challenge

batley: Bulldogs coach John Kear knows his side have a tough task if they want to knock out Northern Rail Cup holders Leigh Centurions.

They head over to Lancashire tomorrow to face their Championship rivals at the quarter-final stage with full-back Jonny Campbell “highly doubtful” due to a dead leg.

Highly-rated prop Alex Walmsley remains sidelined after hand surgery and James Green (knee) is also missing.

All of which will dent the hopes of Batley – 2010 winners – as Kear realises their opponents have a raft of threats in their own side.

“Leigh’s playing roster is very good with Martyn Ridyard, Jon Duffy and young Ryan Brierley from Castleford in the halves, plus Bob Beswick and Gregg McNally at nine and one,” he said.

“The spine of their team is very, very creative and they’ve also got tough forwards up front with pace out wide.”
