Chipping in for scholarship

Askham Bryan College is taking applications for a second round of scholarships sponsored by chipmaker McCain's.

Students starting agricultural courses this September can get their tuition fees paid for two years and three holiday placements in the McCain chain.

One of last year's two winners, Daniel Hird, 24, who grew up on a Dales sheep farm at Kettlewell, said: "I would never have thought of a career in arable, but now I'm seriously thinking of farm management and probably arable rather than livestock based."

The other, Jessica Robinson, was brought up on a smallholding in Lincolnshire and said: "I'd say to any student: Do it."
