Crocked Hull KR full-back Adam Quinlan will not play again this year

HULL KR head coach Tony Smith says star full-back Adam Quinlan will miss the rest of the season after his “freak” injury.

The Australian came off after breaking and dislocating his wrist in the second half of Sunday’s loss against his former club St Helens.

A specialist has since confirmed the extent of the damage and Smith said: “Unfortunately, Quinny’s going to be out for a length of time; it wasn’t a straight-forward fracture.

“He’s a 12-weeker. Unfortunately for the kid, that’s his season done.

“It was just one of those freak accidents. Anyone who watched it you could see he was just innocently going down to try and retrieve the ball and somebody fell on him. He was just unlucky.

“He’ll be operated on on Saturday.”

Quinlan, 27, scored a fine try beforehand and Smith admitted: “Unfortunately he’s one of our best players and best performers when he’s out there.

“What a fantastic try he scored and it’s just his awareness, too.

“He brings to the team some stuff that other people don’t and for him to miss out for the rest of the season is a blow to us but also to Quinny and we’re thinking of him at the moment.”

The former St George-Illawarra player is out of contract at the end of the season and, on the prospects of him playing with KR in 2021, Smith said: “They’re things we need to talk about with Quinny and discussions still to be had.”

Will Dagger will come into the side as Quinlan’s replacement for tomorrow night’s game against leaders Wigan Warriors as part of a number of changes as Rovers look to deal with the short turnaround as efficiently and safely as possible.

“It is tough,” admitted Smith.

“We played Sunday, came in and did a rehab Monday and a review of the game.

“Those boys who didn’t play on the weekend had a good session. Those who did play just did a flush-out.

“We gave them yesterday off. We did a half hour preview of Wigan, put a plan together and then have just done half an hour on the park together in preparation for Wigan.

“Really, in terms of what we get to do as a team together against Wigan is an hour.

Hopefully the messages are in there and some boys will be fresh with some fresh coming in as wella s some boys who are backing up from Sunday.”

Of those fresh players, as well as Dagger, Smith says three half-backs - Jordan Abdull, Mikey Lewis and Joe Keyes - will all “more than likely get their chance” as well as hooker Jez Litten and back-row Elliot Minchella.
