A decade of the best pigs

Raymond Branford of Kellington, pictured with son Mark, had best pen of pigs for the 10th year running at Selby Mart's pre-Christmas fatstock sale.

His champion four fetched 208 a head (2.05/kg) from butchers and wholesalers W Nixon & Sons of Cheadle, Manchester.

Top animal at the York Christmas Show was a homebred pure Limousin heifer from Wilton Lodge Farms of Bishop Wilton, founded by John Earnshaw, who passed away two months ago, leaving his daughter and son-in-law to carry on the business. The heifer was bought by J Penny & Sons of Rawdon for 1765 (290p/kg). Supreme champion in sheep was Steven Bristow, with a pen of Beltex-cross lambs.
