Dewsbury Rams 12 Whitehaven 20: Struggling Dewsbury fall to boot of Rudd

Dewsbury Rams slipped to a seventh straight defeat in the Co-Operative Championship at the hands of fellow strugglers Whitehaven.

The sides shared three tries apiece but it was the goal kicking form of the visitors' stand-off Carl Rudd that proved decisive as he landed all three conversions and also tagged on a late penalty to secure his side's second league win of the campaign.

Rudd gave Whitehaven the lead when he stepped out of a tackle to score a converted try.

Whitehaven produced a spell of pressure which resulted in Graeme Mattinson barging over from acting halfback and Rudd added the goal.

Dewsbury responded well and after Ayden Fall dropped the ball close to the line the Rams hit back with a try when Fall made amends by sending winger Bryn Powell diving in at the corner.

Both sides had further chances to test the scoreboard operator before the visitors extended their lead with a third try as Stefan Marsh's pass sent Andy Thornley through a gap to score and Rudd's goal put them 18-4 up at half time.

Dewsbury were given the perfect start to the second half as Lee Lingard pounced to score for the hosts.

Adam Robinson added Dewsbury's third try 12 minutes from full time following an excellent run to the line but although the Rams pressed in the latter stages they were unable to score again and Rudd completed Whitehaven's victory with a late penalty.
