Dewsbury Rams 14 Leigh Centurions 30: Search goes on for first win as Rams are seen off by leaders

Dewsbury Rams slipped to a ninth straight defeat in the Co-Operative Championship to Leigh Centurions last night.

The Rams produced a determined effort and were unfortunate to be on the wrong end of some dubious refereeing decisions while victory for the Centurions saw them move above Featherstone Rovers to the top of the table.

Luke Stenchion had an early try disallowed for the Rams before Leigh took a 19th-minute lead through loose forward Dave Armistead, converted by Mick Nanyn.

Dewsbury fought back well and Dominic Brambani raced through to score by the posts, with Pat Walker's conversion levelling matters.

Walker edged Dewsbury in front with a penalty but the visitors were able to hit back with a Tommy Goulden try despite Rams' claims that they had hacked the ball dead before he touched down.

There was no disputing Jacob Emmitt's first-half injury-time try as he pounced on Robbie Paul's deft kick to the in-goal area.

Two further Nanyn conversions extended the Centurions' advantage to 18-8 at the interval.

Emmitt looked to have put the result beyond doubt with a 49th- minute try which Nanyn goaled but Dewsbury showed great character to fight back.

Andy Bostock stormed over for a deserved try which Pat Walker improved but try as they might, the Rams were unable to add a further score which would have set up a grandstand finish.

Late in the game, Leigh stand-off Martyn Ridyard capitalised on a dropped ball to race over for a try and Nanyn converted to end the Rams' hopes of a bonus point.
