Dewsbury Rams 6 Leigh Centurions 36: Rams endure record penalty count on way to home defeat

DEWSBURY Rams were brushed aside for a second week running as head coach Glenn Morrison lost James Craven during the warm-up and then had his woes compounded by the award of 31 penalties – 19 against his side – the highest total recorded in the club’s 114-year history.

Dewsbury made an impressive start, but fell behind and were unable to recover.

Castleford Tigers loanee Stephen Nash scored a try on eight minutes, which stand-in full back Dale Morton improved.

But the Centurions responded with tries from Sean Penkywicz and James Taylor.

On the stroke of half-time, Martyn Ridyard landed back-to-back penalties to enforce an eight-point gap.

Dewsbury began the second period brightly, but a loose carry from Morton effectively put the game beyond Morrison’s men.

Ridyard latched onto possession and fed John Pownall, whose pace enabled him to touch down.

Matt Gardner became Leigh’s fourth try-scorer just shy of the hour mark before Dewsbury had Nash sin-binned for alleged punching. Leigh’s Rob Parker, also involved in the fracas, followed him from the field.

Rrom the resulting penalty to the Centurions, Ridyard broke free to bag the away side’s penultimate points, Penkywicz completing the six-try romp.
