Dobson happy to take ‘lucky’ try for Rovers

Hull KR star Michael Dobson believes the bad decisions levelled themselves out in Saturday’s epic derby, writes Dave Craven.

The Australian scrum-half benefited from an obvious forward pass as he scored during their brilliant comeback against Hull FC.

Trailing 30-16 with just 12 minutes to go, Rovers somehow recovered to sneak a 32-30 success.

Hull players were seething about Steve Ganson’s decision to allow Dobson’s try which then meant David Hodgson’s thrilling score in the dramatic final seconds gave their rivals victory.

“I’ve not seen the replays but apparently it was a forward pass,” admitted Dobson. “But you’ve got to take the tries when you can and it’s only my second this year so I will.

“I just wanted to catch the ball and get it over the line. When he blew the whistle I was delighted.

“But we had a couple of decisions go against us; I probably shouldn’t have been sent for 10 so we got one back at the end.”

Their talisman was sin-binned early on for a professional foul on Will Sharp, flopping on the breakaway Hull winger after he had been tackled.

Despite Dobson’s belief, a yellow card was perhaps deserved but there is no denying Rovers’ spirit and resolve earned them rich rewards.

He hailed it one of the “most dramatic wins” of his career and added: “I was talking to a couple of the boys and I actually didn’t think the game had gone.

“I felt we were on top and a couple of their tries came against the run of play.”

The defeat raised question marks about Hull’s title credentials whose coach Peter Gentle refused to use the controversy as an excuse.

“It was farcical it was that far forward but what can you do?” he said. “You are going to get bad calls.

“If you score 30 points, it’s enough to win any game,” he added.

To compound Hull’s misery, centre Tony Martin – just back from a neck injury – was carried off at the time of Rovers’ fightback with a suspected ruptured Achilles.
