Euro reward for landowner's environmental initiatives

Yorkshire landowner Charles Forbes Adam, owner of the Escrick Park Estate, near York, has earned a European award for improving the environment.

Mr Forbes Adam has received the Anders Wall Award from the Brussels-based European Landowners' Organisation in recognition of environmental initiatives on his 8,000-acre estate since he started running it, 20 years ago. He will collect his trophy and 10,000 euros at a ceremony in The Netherlands in May.

One of the main achievements listed in the presentation on his behalf by Tadcaster-based consultant Tango Fawcett was National Nature Reserve status for the restoration of 275-hectare Skipwith Common through strategic grazing, using Hebridean sheep, Longhorn cattle and Exmoor ponies.

The common is open to the public.

The presentation added that Mr Forbes Adam had worked with 12 tenant farmers to create more than 18kms of new hedges and nearly 90 hectares of wildlife habitat on arable land as well as contributing to the local economy through renovation of redundant farm buildings to make eco-friendly offices.

Mr Forbes Adam, 52, is descended from Sir Henry Thompson, who bought the Lordship of Escrick and associated land and properties in 1668.
