Giants to treat Hull with respect in search of hat-trick

HUDDERSFIELD Giants assistant coach Paul Anderson reckons his squad can read nothing into their previous record against Hull FC.

Ahead of tomorrow’s trip to East Yorkshire, they have already defeated the Airlie Birds twice this season in a five-match winning sequence which stretches back more than two years.

Huddersfield are in need of another triumph as they look to resurrect their title challenge.

Last week’s 46-10 rout of London Broncos was a first success in six outings and Anderson hopes it could act as a catalyst.

However, he is wary of taking Hull lightly.

“We played them in that short period of time over Easter but it has been a while since then,” said Anderson, following a 22-4 league victory at the Galpharm swiftly followed by their 42-16 cup progression at Hull.

“We have made a few changes and so have they. We know that if we do well then we give ourselves a good opportunity.

“Hull have got a fair amount of injuries and different personnel playing different positions so it is probably hurting them.

“But what they are doing is competing and competing hard.

“If we sit back and watch them, they will be in front again.

“We have to be aware of what the threats are, who the players are, and make sure we work hard for ourselves.”

Huddersfield’s chances will be buoyed by the likely return of Luke O’Donnell.

The ex-Australia Test back-row has been missing since pulling a hamstring in the warm-up to the St Helens game on May 14 and his absence has clearly been felt.

“We feel confident when he is in our environment,” admitted Anderson, about the highly-respected 31-year-old.

“If he gets a run-out at the weekend then the confidence will run alongside him because I know what a competitor he is.”

Anderson says Tommy Lee is also likely to feature in the absence of ex-England hooker Luke Robinson, who aggravated an elbow injury against London.

Building on that victory is paramount as Huddersfield attempt to reclaim their place in the upper echelons of the elite.

“The players are aware what works and what doesn’t work,” he said. “Obviously, the last five or six weeks have proved that.

“It’s just been back to basics and our challenge is for us to back that win up against another good team.”
