Gibson feels closer to home with Tigers

CASTLEFORD Tigers have signed Salford City Reds centre Ashley Gibson on a two-year contract starting at the end of the season, writes Dave Craven.

The ex-Leeds Rhinos player, 26, is equally adept on the wing and will offer coach Daryl Powell plenty of versatility as he starts building his squad for 2014.

Gibson has scored 54 tries in 111 Super League matches for Salford since leaving Headingley four years ago and will face Castleford when the sides meet at Wheldon Road on Sunday.

Powell said: “Ashley is a versatile and skilful player with a great attitude and his signing further strengthens the quality and depth in our squad for next season.”

Leeds-born Gibson, who also works as a model, added: “When my manager came to me saying that Cas were interested in me I was over the moon.

“There were a couple of other offers but I wanted to be playing my rugby close to home.”

Hull FC hooker Aaron Heremaia has been charged with an alleged “spear” tackle on Wigan Warriors captain Sean O’Loughlin during their Challenge Cup final defeat.

He can submit an early guilty plea, but any ban will see him miss Friday’s Super League re-match between the clubs – and depleted Hull are already without four of their pack after they picked up injuries at Wembley.
