Greenwood strikes to break Cougars’ hearts

Miles Greenwood’s late try robbed Keighley of victory in an enthralling Championship clash.

Batley took the lead as Lee Paterson broke clear on the right and produced an offload to send in Sam Scott back on the inside, before Scott Leatherbarrow added a penalty.

Keighley hit-back with James Feather and Sean Hesketh combining to send in Daley Williams. Batley quickly replied, though, as Ben Black sent in Sam Scott with a cut-out pass.

They extended their lead further before half-time when Leatherbarrow fooled his former team-mates with a pass back on the inside to to feed Greenwood in for his first try.

Cougars started on the comeback trail as Paul Handforth’s cross-field kick was scooped back by Barnett to Williams, who forced his way through. Both Handforth and Danny Jones combined to send Richie Barnett and Jones then broke the line for a try.

However, Jones was then at fault, as he came flying out of the line and missed his tackle, which gave Batley the overlap out-wide for Josh Griffin to cross.

The Wales international more than made up for that effort. He kicked a 40-20 before sending in Barnett at the corner in the next tackle in what looked like the winning try.

Or so they thought.
