Huddersfield Giants boss Ian Watson on Salford Red Devils 'kryptonite' claims and half-back conundrum

IAN WATSON has baulked at suggestions that Huddersfield Giants struggle against expansive teams ahead of Saturday's play-off showdown with Salford Red Devils.

It will be a clash of styles at the John Smith's Stadium as the Roses rivals vie for a semi-final place.

Whereas the Giants complete high and grind the opposition down, Salford attack from deep and get to the edges quickly.

The Red Devils blew Huddersfield away in the most recent meeting at the AJ Bell Stadium last month but Watson was quick to point to the previous two games against his former club.

"They lost twice to us and have won one game," he told The Yorkshire Post.

"We'll see on the day. You look at some of the teams that have tried to throw the ball around on us recently and they haven't been able to get the ball around us.

"One thing I'd say about Salford is they have a good execution and we need to make sure our defence is on point.

"Our process is in place and we're ready to play play-off football. This is what we've been aiming for all year. It's about making sure we nail it now."

Although the Giants finished three places higher than the Red Devils in the table, they had only one Dream Team representative to Salford's three.

Watson was surprised to see the likes of Ricky Leutele and Tui Lolohea overlooked, as well as Salford half-back Marc Sneyd.

"We'll focus on the positives of Crispy (Chris McQueen) being involved in the Dream Team but for me, other people needed to be in there from Huddersfield," said Watson.

"Salford have got a few players in the Dream Team so they'll be confident and have got threats we need to be aware of.

"One of the players who wasn't picked is Marc Sneyd who has been outstanding for Salford. He'll be one to keep an eye on."

Theo Fages is set to hand the Giants a major boost after recovering from the head injury that forced him to miss the last two games.

Watson must decide whether to go with two organisers in Fages and Oliver Russell or stick with the mercurial Will Pryce following an impressive showing in the win over Wakefield Trinity.

"It's going to be an interesting choice," said Watson.

"We've got a bit of a conundrum there because Prycey was outstanding in his last game. He brings something different to us.

"I've got my set-up in my own mind but I need to clarify that with the boys."
