Huddersfield Giants v Salford Red Devils - 200 not out for Lee Gaskell

HUDDERSFIELD Giants interim head coach Luke Robinson is looking forward to seeing playmaker Lee Gaskell return from injury tonight for his 200th career game.

The stand-off, 29, has been out of action with a broken thumb but is back for the Super League match against Salford Red Devils, with whom he spent a successful loan spell in 2013.

Former Bradford Bulls star Gaskell had struck up a fine partnership with Australian Aidan Sezer earlier this season but suffered the injury on the club’s first game back after lockdown against Leeds Rhinos.

Huddersfield, promptly, went on a miserable run that saw head coach Simon Woolford depart, but now head to Emerald Headingley with Robinson having overseen three successive wins.

Gaskell has been named in the 21-man squad previously but has not played. Robinson says he will tonight and added: “Gasky’s been in and around the squad now for a little while.

“He’s not been far off. I’ve been very cautious not to rush him. And we’ve been winning.

“But I’d like to give credit to two players who are going to miss out. Jordan Turner has moved around the squad. We put him at centre and he’s played a bit of six and has been tremendous these last few weeks.

“He’s really steadied the ship and shown his influence but unfortunately had a head knock last week and for that reason – and some precaution regards his head – he’s not going to make it.”

Robinson also praised 23-year-old Academy product Sam Wood. “Woody played on the wing last week and was exceptional,” he said.

“He’s a bit of an unsung hero and he’s done a lot of good things for us. He’s very versatile and a dream for a coach: he’s played wing, centre, in the middle and at half and done all the right things.”

Winger Darnell McIntosh is set to resume and with Joe Wardle back in the squad, Giants are at strength against opponents who have just reached the Challenge Cup final and are on a four game-winning run themselves under Ian Watson.

“I’ve been really impressed with them,” said Robinson, who played almost 100 games for Salford between 2005 and 2007.

“Watto’s done an exceptional job for the last few years. I don’t mean this disrespectfully but they have been a bit of a nomad club, surrounded by football.

“They’re not the Wigans and St Helens, littered with lots of amateur rugby league clubs.

“But they do just seem to do an exceptional job; lads on the periphery of other clubs, Watto seems to reinvent them and bring out the best in them.

“You can see that. They really play for him and have a bit of a never-say-die attitude.

“They are really dogged, they stay in the fight and they showed that in the quarter-final against Catalans; they probably should never have won that game but found a way of winning.”

Meanwhile, Robinson hopes Huddersfield will give Chris McQueen a deal for 2021 given how the Australian second-row – brought in on a trial contract last month – has impressed so far.

The former Queensland State of Origin player, 33, has scored two tries in four games after being released by Wests Tigers.

Robinson said: “That’s for the club but for me, I’d like him to stay.

“Chris has been there and done it at the highest level.

“He’s been a really good player for us since he’s come in and steadied that right side down.

“He knows how to play the game. Everything he has done on the field has been tremendous and off it as well.

“The way he’s gone about things has been second to none and he’s someone I feel will definitely bolster our squad and make us better.”
