Hull KR 38 Leeds Rhinos 28: Rhinos tamed by Rovers

HULL KR picked up only their second win since the first day of the season with a frenetic high-scoring victory over Leeds Rhinos this afternoon, writes Dave Craven.

Justin Morgan’s side were 10-0 down inside just 14 minutes but, with the outstanding Ben Galea and Blake Green taking charge, responded to strike with 28 unanswered points.

Captain Mick Vella, dynamic centre Kris Welham, Matt Cook - on his first appearance this year - Scott Murrell and Liam Colbon, just 80 seconds into the second half, all scored tries as the rampant hosts proved they can still hurt teams without injured playmaker Michael Dobson.

Leeds, typically, refused to lie down and caused some anxious moments as Ryan Hall and Paul McShane crossed either side of Sam Latus’ effort.

But, after Lee Smith and Kallum Watkins gave them such a promising start by capitalising on poor defence down Rovers’ left, they made too many unforced errors to allow Hull KR’s confidence to grow and leave them with just one win from four.

Stylish Australian stand-off Green fittingly sent Galea surging over off a fine short pass to confirm victory with five minutes to go, Murrell adding his fifth goal.

Watkins grabbed his second with a quality individual effort, breaking clear and then showing great speed to hack ahead and score between the posts, Kevin Sinfield kicking his fourth conversion, but it mattered little as Rovers took the richly-deserved points.
