Hull KR boss Tony Smith says "thoughts are with" crocked Adam Quinlan

HULL KR head coach Tony Smith says he does not know how long Adam Quinlan will be out of action after his full-back was taken to hospital today with a broken and dislocated wrist.

The impressive Australian had scored a try against his former club St Helens as Rovers threatened to cause a shock versus the champions before losing 32-18 at Halliwell Jones Stadium.

But he was helped off in severe pain during the second period after suffering the injury.

Smith said: “Adam Quinlan has broken his wrist and dislocated it also.

“I’m not sure how long it’s going to be just yet but it’s not a couple of weeker, that’s for sure.

“It’s a real blow for Adam and the team as well. But our thoughts are with Adam first and foremost.”

Bottom-of-the-table Rovers were level 12-12 early in the second half before Saints - who had gone more than three hours without conceding a point - eventually took control.

It was KR’s first game in three weeks and Smith said: “We did alright for our second game.

"We've not got much rugby under our belt; some other teams have had a chance to get a bit of continuity.

"I thought we were pretty rusty to start with but, once we got into our plan and held onto the ball, I thought we troubled them.

"Not many teams have scored 18 points against Saints.

“The half-time scoreline was encouraging, although in the second half we were a little sloppy.

"I still think there is more to come from us. I like to think we'll get into a bit of continuity and flow as long as we don't get any injuries.”

But Smith revealed Ryan Brierley, who also suffered a knock late on, is unlikely to play as they quickly start to prepare to face Wigan Warriors on Thursday.

“We’ve got a four-day turnaround now so anybody with knocks won’t play,” he said.

“Player welfare has got to come first. We’ve got some fresh people ready to go but we’ll still have to back up some players from today’s game to play on Thursday.

“That’s one of the trials and tribulations.”

Australian prop Mitch Garbutt was absent today and Smith explained: “Mitch has had a little setback himself with a little tear in his calf muscle from training.

“He won’t be available on Thursday but I’d hope that he’s available for the next Saints game.”
