Injury-hit Sculthorpe ends unhappy spell at Bradford

Bradford Bulls have released former Wigan and Wakefield prop forward Danny Sculthorpe by mutual consent.

The 31-year-old Sculthorpe, younger brother of former Great Britain international Paul, joined the Bulls on a two-year contract 12 months ago but never played for them after being struck down by injury and illness.

Sculthorpe spent much of this year in and out of hospital after contracting a serious bone infection during a routine back operation.

Although he is now on the road to recovery, a return to action is unlikely in time for the new Super League campaign and Bradford, who have totally re-shaped their squad for 2011 under new coach Mick Potter, say he is no longer in their plans.

Bulls chairman Peter Hood said: "We were delighted to have secured Danny's services for 2010 and 2011 and it was most unfortunate that injury meant he was never able to play for the club.

"I am pleased to say that Danny's post-operative rehab is going well, although he will probably miss the whole of pre-season.

"As part of the process of finalising our squad for next season, we have reached an amicable settlement as regards the final year of Danny's contract, meaning he is now free to sign elsewhere."

Despite his struggles, Sculthorpe praised the club for their patience throughout his injury woes.

He said: "I would like to thank the club for their support throughout what has been a very difficult and frustrating time for me and my family. I am now focused on regaining full fitness and resuming my career."

Castleford Tigers have snapped up former Wigan winger Martin Aspinwall, who was released by Huddersfield at the end of the season, and secured the future of promising forward Jonny Walker.

Aspinwall, 29, joins the Tigers on a 12-month deal and will help fill the void created by the departure of Joe Westerman to Hull.

"While he can play in the outside backs, we have signed him as a back row forward," said Castleford coach Terry Matterson.

Aspinwall is the Tigers' sixth new signing so far, joining Richard Mathers (Warrington), Danny Orr (Harlequins), Nick Youngquest (Crusaders) and St Helens duo Nick Fozzard and Jacob Emmitt.

Crusaders have signed former Great Britain international Paul Johnson on a one-year-deal after being released by Wakefield.

The Rugby Football League have cancelled the membership of the Blackpool Panthers – in financial trouble after going into administration – meaning they will not take their place in Co-Operative Championship One next season.
