Kear takes two-for-one option over leader Morrison

WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats coach John Kear believes returning captain Glenn Morrison will be crucial to their hopes of ruining arch-rivals Castleford Tigers’ perfect home record tonight.

The experienced Australian, 34, sat out last week’s loss at St Helens with a dead leg, the first game he has missed this season.

They head to Wheldon Road to face a side who have stunned the rest of Engage Super League with an enthralling style of football which sees them just a point off leaders Huddersfield Giants.

Kear’s own team are still trying to find their feet after the turmoil of administration and being docked six points.

He knows having his rugged back-row in the fold once more, along with full-back Aaron Murphy after a lengthier spell on the sidelines, will enhance their chances of causing an upset.

“Morro is massive for us and I’m pretty certain if we’d tried to play him last week we’d have lost him for the entire Easter period,” said Trinity coach Kear whose side will entertain champions Wigan Warriors on Easter Monday.

“This way it’s a two-for-one offer; we took the hit at Saints and hopefully we’ll get the next two out of him.

“It is so important to us to have him out on the field as much as possible and that’s why we made the decision.”

Morrison, who never gained State of Origin or international honours before moving to Super League, initially with Bradford in 2007, is hoping to earn a place in the Exiles’ squad to face England on June 10.

Kear said: “I don’t want him to get picked as I want him playing here for Wakefield.

“But it’d be a great honour for the club and just reward for Morro.”

He added: “Cas have been great and one of the stories of the season so far.

“They’re playing some quality rugby and in Rangi Chase have the top individual who has been brilliant; he’s such a danger.”

Guest of honour at the Probiz Coliseum will be 1999 Man of Steel Adrian Vowles, a former captain of both clubs who has flown over from Australia and will present the winners with the Adam Watene Trophy, awarded in memory of the Wakefield and Castleford prop who died in 2008.

Meanwhile, Castleford heroes of yesteryear including Keith Hepworth, Alan Hardisty, John Joyner and Roger Millward will be signing copies of Phil Hodgson’s new book 20 Legends: Castleford Rugby League at Bridge Arts Centre on Sagar Street in the town tomorrow from 11am.
