Keighley Cougars 18 North Wales 30: Jones kick nets bonus for Cougars

Keighley are a point away from Championship safety after a late Danny Jones goal saw them gain a bonus point in defeat to North Wales Crusaders.

Crusaders could not asked for a better start, with three converted tries. Scott Turner set-up Stephen Wild for the opening try. Mick Govin’s kick was missed by Richie Barnett, gifting Rob Massam a try, before Turner touched down on the back of Greg Wilde’s neat offload. Tommy Johnson converted all three tries.

A period of sustained Cougars pressure then saw the home side hit-back as half-backs Paul Handforth and Jones combined to send in Paul White.

But the Welsh outfit led 24-4 at the break, as Mick Govin sent through Toby Adamson for a Johnson-converted try.

Jones ghosted his way through and then converted his own try.

Barnett had a score disallowed before Handforth found Josh Lynam on an angled run for the touchdown Jones once again goaling to see them trial by eight.

Jono Smith’s try looked to have denied Cougars of a crucial bonus point after Johnson converted, before Jones stepped up with the late kick.
