Leigh Centurions 40 Hunslet Hawks 0: Kain and March pick up injuries for Hawks

Hunslet arrived at Leigh Sports Village looking for a first win at the venue against the Centurions.

Boosted by the inclusion of Leeds prop Richard Moore, the visitors needed a good start but were put under pressure from the start as Michael Ostick stormed through the middle and only good defence from Waine Pryce stopped Jonny Pownall.

The Hawks remained under pressure for most of the opening quarter and former Halifax hooker Sean Penkywicz crossed after four minutes and was quickly followed to the line by Martyn Ridyard after 11 minutes when David Clayton spilled the ball.

Penkywicz was at the hub of Leigh’s next score when he fired a pass for Matt Gardner to surge over and Sam Hopkins went under the posts after half an hour. Ridyard goaled to make it 22-0 at half-time.

The Hawks started the new half impressively with Andy Yates, John Oakes and Tommy Haughey all driving well and they fashioned a chance after 46 minutes only for the defence to halt Steve Lewis.

An improved effort couldn’t deny Leigh totally and they completed a 40-0 success thanks to further tries from Michael Ostick, Ryan Brierley before Hopkins sealed the win with a solo run and Ridyard struck his sixth goal.

Hunslet will have to check on the fitness of Stuart Kain and David March before their next game against Dewsbury.
