London Skolars 12 Hunslet Hawks 60: McHugh shines as Hunslet run riot

HUNSLET showed why they are many people's favourites to win Championship One this year, thrashing their hosts thanks in large part to centre Wayne McHugh's 32-point haul.

McHugh's first try came soon after James Houston had opened the scoring for the Hawks, the second in a flurry of Hunslet tries midway through the first half which secured victory for the South Leeds team, who led 28-6 at the break, Matt Thomas getting Skolars' try.

McHugh kicked with regular accuracy, converting seven tries and notching a penalty, missing just three times, once from his own third try, wide on the left. His fourth touchdown came in a late flourish in which Adam Sullivan and Nathan Larvin also scored to bring up the 60-point mark.

David Clayton got the Hawks's other score on 53 minutes.

Skolars could not contain the creativity of player-coach Paul March at scrum-half nor hooker Richard Chapman, both of whom scored a try, and Tommy Haughey showed his Super League quality with a fine display at loose forward.

His role as master yard-gainer was taken late on by giant prop Sullivan, who earned good field position time and again for the backs to exploit.

Aran Quinn scored a consolation for Skolars but Larvin's last minute score on the left was arguably the try of the game and put a neat seal on an excellent Hunslet display.
