Navy go down fighting as Hunslet win

HUNSLET torpedoed the Navy out of the Challenge Cup with a second-half try blitz but they had to wipe out a 10-point deficit.

The Hawks were hit by a sickness bug which left them with only 17 players to choose from but they sprinted into the lead after only 40 seconds, centre David Clayton racing away.

The Navy, who defeated Leigh Miners in the last round, hit back with tries by Tommy Wilkinson and Steve Lockton, Kev Botwood converting the latter. Navy prop Richie Metcalfe knocked on with the line at his mercy but with Hunslet making unforced errors, Botwood stretched the lead to 14-4 with two penalties.

Hunslet cut the deficit to four points, Steve Watson going over from a pass by Danny Ratcliffe who tagged on the goal before Luke Helliwell sent captain David March stretching for the line in the corner to level the scores.

That was the start of a five-try salvo in 19 minutes for the Hawks, Ratcliffe, Dennis Tuffour, Josh Nathaniel and Ryan Benjafield touching down and Ratcliffe and Danny Allan adding a conversion each.
