Newton's scan shows injury is not serious

RELIEVED Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have received a positive medical report on injured hooker Terry Newton.

The former Great Britain international lasted just 17 minutes of his debut against Harlequins before departing with a bicep problem.

However, Newton was assessed yesterday and coach John Kear said the news was good.

"Terry's had a scan and that has shown the injury is not serious," he said. "He has a good chance of being fit in time to play Catalans Dragons on Sunday and will certainly be fit to play against Leeds Rhinos the following week."

The injury to Newton – who joined on a two-year deal from Bradford – was one of the few negatives in Wakefield's 18-10 opening-day triumph in London.

Kear said: "I was very pleased with the victory. We defended pretty well and worked really hard for each other.

"We could improve with the ball in hand but the fact is we still managed to play well enough to post sufficient points to win."

His side's determination protecting their line was particularly pleasing for Kear.

"At the start of a new season, teams can be rusty right up to round seven or eight," he said.

"A lot of the games are won by rolling your sleeves up and working really hard for one another and that's what we did.

"We've got Catalans in our first home match on Sunday and have to repeat that again."

Wakefield Wildcat Community Trust, in partnership with the Wakefield Trinity Wildcat Learning Zone (Playing for Success Centre), has been awarded a significant five-figure grant.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has provided 47,200 to set up a project entitled Belle Vue Stadium…Booked and Boxed.

With Wakefield hoping to move into a new home in 2012, the project will preserve the history of the stadium at Belle Vue and Wakefield Trinity Wildcats during their stay at the Doncaster Road site.
