Opportunity knocks for Carlile as Rovers deal with early injury crisis

The former Bradford Bulls hooker missed most of last season with Huddersfield Giants after specialists discovered a faulty heart valve.

Carlile, 21, recovered though and made the switch to East Yorkshire over the winter after being released.

So far, he has had to bide his time at Craven Park behind Australian star Lincoln Withers and ex-Hull FC rake Josh Hodgson.

However, with both those hookers rated as ‘50-50’ for the trip to Warrington as Rovers’ mounting injury problems continue, Carlile has been drafted into the squad and may get his chance.

Winless Rovers, already without key trio Michael Dobson, Ben Galea and Blake Green, lost winger Dave Hodgson to a rib problem in the 36-36 draw with St Helens last week.

It is not the best situation for coach Craig Sandercock as his depleted squad heads to last season’s table toppers.

“It’s a pretty horrendous injury toll at the moment but in saying that, it gives some of the other boys an opportunity to play this week and if they perform well then that tells me that they deserve a regular place in this football team,” he said.

“On paper, Warrington have the best side in the competition and it’s a chance for some of the boys to test themselves. It would be nice if everyone was available and could train with a full squad but we’re doing the best we can.”

Castleford Tigers, meanwhile, are unchanged for tomorrow’s visit of Wigan Warriors.
