Potter not thinking of a trip to Wembley

Mick Potter shrugged off talk of a trip to Wembley after his St Helens side battled into the Challenge Cup quarter-finals with a 30-10 win over Harlequins.

The Saints ran in 24 unanswered points after the break to ease into the last eight and end Quins' cup hopes.

But Potter insists Saints are thinking of nothing more than their next game.

He said: "Cup games are very different to Super League games and you have to approach them differently.

"It is a straight knock-out and teams try things they may not do in a league game.

"For that reason I don't think you can ever think that far ahead in this competition.

"This was a really tough game for us. Quins did not surprise us as we know they are a good side but the first half was a bit of a wake-up call for us.

"After the break though we started competing and deserved the win."

Harlequins led 10-6 at the break after an end-to-end first 40 minutes that saw both sides play with real swagger.

Saints took an early lead when Keiron Cunningham burrowed over after Matt Gidley was held inches from the line.

But the Londoners stormed back with scores from David Howell and Luke Gale to go in ahead and with good value.

After the break the visitors stepped things up and Quins, hit by injuries to Danny Ward and Ben Jones, could not deal with the elevation in pace.

Ade Gardner was first to go over, and when Francis Meli helped himself to two straightforward tries in the corner Saints had the upper hand.

Kyle Eastmond then booted two penalties to stretch the lead, although Quins did have chances to get back into it – Howell unable to ground the ball and Ryan Esders knocking on when a try looked in the offing.

Saints saw that out though, and completed the scoring when Leon Pryce cantered over in the dying seconds.

Despite seeing his side dumped out of the cup, Quins coach Brian McDermott tried to stay positive.

He said: "I thought we had a real good crack and did plenty of good stuff. I think you have to give credit to St Helens though."
