Powell set to inherit Tigers team buoyed by recent form

Daryl Powell is set to be confirmed as Castleford’s new coach tomorrow and should thank interim boss Danny Orr for him not inheriting a side rooted to the bottom of the Super League table.

Powell confirmed in the wake of Featherstone’s win at Batley yesterday that he was leaving the club after a successful four-year stint in charge, and is expected to be unveiled by the Tigers in the morning.

A month ago the job looked liked a poisoned chalice but, with former player Orr having overseen wins against Widnes and now Hull KR, Powell will pick up a squad now third-bottom on points difference having overhauled London and Salford.

The Tigers recovered from
18-12 down to see off Rovers, who are rapidly sliding themselves with three defeats in as many league games.

Caretaker coach Orr was delighted with his team’s display, with Australian winger Justin Carney scoring twice as Castleford won the game with four tries in a blistering 13-minute spell in the second period.

“I thought the lads played really well,” said Orr, who will stay on at the club to assist new coach Powell. “We were pretty good in the first half and the second half was probably the best we have played this year and we thoroughly deserved our win.

“We played some pretty good stuff in the second half. We held the ball really well and we turned the ball over in the right areas of the field.”

Liam Salter’s two tries and Michael Dobson’s four goals were in vain for as they suffered another blow to their top-eight hopes.

Coach Craig Sandercock said: “Nothing went particularly wrong. I’m pretty proud of the boys.

“I’ve never been involved in a rugby league game where one side has defended their own line for the entire 80 minutes.

“CastIeford had enough ball to win 50 games, let alone one.

“For us it keep it close and defend like we did was a pretty good effort.

“The difference between the two sides was possession.”
