Recovering Saints have Rhinos in their sights, says Amor

ST HELENS prop Kyle Amor has warned former club Leeds Rhinos they still harbour hopes of retaining the League Leaders’ Shield.

The Cumbrian forward helped Saints to top spot and Grand Final glory last season, his first campaign there following a £50,000 move from Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

But Leeds are current front-runners and will go six points clear of second-placed Saints at the halfway point if they beat them tonight.

Rhinos are out there at the top of the table and everyone’s trying to catch them now, rightfully so,” admitted Amor, whose Saints side are beginning to recover numbers following an injury-hit start to the year.

“As players and as a club you should always strive to achieve everything possible and I know for us finishing top is massively important.

“We did enough last year, managed to drag ourselves over the line and it’s more of a confidence thing than anything plus reward for the effort put in over the year.

“But it is important to finish top and, very much so, everyone here is trying to catch Rhinos.

“Hopefully, with the bodies we’ve got back, another week training together, when they come to our place we can put in another good performance.

“I’ve no doubt it’ll be a belting game.”

Amor, 27, made just three appearances for Leeds in 2010 after joining from home-town Whitehaven but his career really blossomed after moving to Trinity the following year.

That development then earned him a prime move to Saints where he is revelling.

They dug out an 11-8 victory at Huddersfield on Sunday, with Australian scrum-half Luke Walks back following a nine-month injury, after defeats against Wigan Warriors and Hull FC threatened to derail them.

Amor admitted: “It was a massive win. We’ve not had a great Easter so that was huge.

“We looked a bit nervous when we had chances but, thankfully, had a real dig defensively and managed to get the win.

“Both teams were desperate for that. Hopefully, we can go on another run now. Friday will be tough but we’re ready.”
