Revenge not an issue for Giants’ Anderson

HUDDERSFIELD Giants head coach Paul Anderson maintains revenge is not on the agenda when they face Bradford Bulls tomorrow.

Their West Yorkshire rivals inflicted a sobering 43-18 defeat on them at John Smith’s Stadium back in March.

Although second-placed Huddersfield have lost just three of their following dozen games since, it stuck in the throat of many of their fans.

“It is certainly the case that they came and embarrassed us on our home ground in round five of the competition,” said Anderson.

“Now we are in round 16 and we can go and put that right.

“But we don’t use revenge as motivation in our preparation and, while some people might think that we owe them one, we have to concentrate on going out and doing our job.”

Undoubtedly, Huddersfield have been doing that pretty efficiently of late.

The Challenge Cup destruction of Leeds Rhinos was perhaps a highlight but they have also won in Perpignan and at Headingley in the league.

They know victory tomorrow will narrow the gap to leaders Wigan, who face a tricky game against champions Leeds directly after them to round off the event in Manchester, to just one point.

Anderson added: “Bradford did give us a really good reality check at home when they tore into us.

“We’re doing alright at the moment but we can’t afford to be complacent. Complacency could embarrass us.

“We’ve handled big occasions well this year and that stands us in good stead.”

There is no return yet from injury for England Knights star Michael Lawrence while ex-Bradford centre Joe Wardle completes his two-game ban tomorrow.

The only change to the squad that beat Widnes Vikings last week sees winger Ben Blackmore replace Matty Dawson.

“I was pretty satisfied with what we did at Widnes,” added Anderson.

“We had a lot of people having to play in different positions, so we did lack a bit of cohesion at times, but it was a job well done to go over there and come back with the two points.”
