Rhyse Martin appeal deemed 'frivolous' to leave Leeds Rhinos without key man for play-offs

Rhyse Martin will miss Leeds Rhinos' play-off clash with Catalans Dragons and potentially a semi-final after his appeal against a one-match ban was deemed frivolous.

The goalkicking forward was charged with a grade A high tackle on former team-mate Alex Mellor during Saturday’s 14-8 win over Castleford Tigers, a result that booked Leeds' place in the play-offs.

The Rhinos challenged the punishment handed down by the Rugby Football League's match review panel but were unsuccessful at a tribunal.

To compound matters, Martin's suspension has been doubled, ruling him out of the semi-finals should Leeds beat Catalans in Perpignan.

"Rhyse Martin has had his appeal for a grade A charge rejected and will miss Friday’s play-off game in Perpignan," read a club statement on Twitter.

"In addition, he has been given another game ban for a frivolous challenge to the original charge."

The loss of Martin is a major blow for the Rhinos in their quest for a first Super League title since 2017.

Martin is on the brink of breaking a Super League record after succeeding with his last 36 kicks at goal, while he has also contributed eight tries in his 24 appearances this season.
