RL LATEST: Long orchestrates Rovers’ downfall

ALL the pre-match talk was about Michael Dobson’s acclaimed return - and Willie Mason’s absence - but it was another scrum-half who rolled back the years today to deliver Hull FC a comprehensive 36-18 victory in the 212th city derby.

Sean Long, back from a two-game suspension, orchestrated Hull KR’s downfall with a kicking masterclass that left their battered opponents jaded and in disarray.

While Dobson showed glimpses of his class following an eight-week injury absence, setting up Kris Welham’s first half try, it was former Great Britain star Long who sustained the quality, his steepling kicks causing chaos for winger Sam Latus.

The 34-year also scored a controversial first half try himself, created the match-winner for Richard Whiting with a splendid long pass and then set in motion Kirk Yeaman’s second at the death after dummying a drop goal.

Willie Manu was outstanding for the Airlie Birds who saw England winger Tom Briscoe score two tries and Martin Gleeson cross on his debut.

However, it needed a late flourish - which their second half dominance warranted - to see Rovers off as Ben Cockayne dived over to see the visitors trail just 22-18 in the 71st minute, Hull having seen THREE efforts ruled out by the video official inside six minutes.

Yeaman and Briscoe added the gloss after Tickle - who slotted six goals - had added a 75th minute penalty.

Hull, in front of a 19,795 crowd, led 16-12 at the break, Matt Cook and Kris Welham having scored Rovers’ tries but Long’s control saw them run out comfortable winners, easing the pain of their opening weekend loss and last season’s play-off defeat against their bitter rivals.
