Rovers’ Dobson has word with Weyman

super league: Departing Hull KR star Michael Dobson played a significant role in securing the signature of ex-Australia prop Michael Weyman, writes Dave Craven.

The East Yorkshire club yesterday announced it has captured the St George-Illawarra forward on a two-year deal from next season, a major acquisition for coach Craig Sandercock.

Hull KR captain Michael Dobson may be going the other way having last month confirmed his move to Newcastle Knights for 2014 but not before helping tie up the State of Origin star as a replacement for Hull FC-bound Mickey Paea.

“I had several conversations with Sandy and loved the way he spoke so passionately about the club and the plans for the future,” said Weyman.

“I also spoke to Michael Dobson, as we played together at Canberra, and he had nothing but good things to say about the club and the city.

“Travis Burns is someone else who I’ve played against many times as well and he too is a great advocate of the club and the area. I just can’t wait to get over and get started.”

Weyman, who has won an NRL Grand Final and represented New South Wales as well as the Kangaroos, will arrive once the current Australian season concludes.

“I came across on tour with the Australian Schoolboys back in 2002 and really enjoyed it so have always kept an open mind about playing in the Super League,” he added.

“I also played here with St George-Illawarra in the World Club Challenge a couple of years ago which was another great experience.

“I love looking after the younger blokes and passing on what I’ve learned over the years.

“I’ve learned as I’ve gone along and I’m sure we’ll do the same as a group next season.

“In terms of how I play my own game, it’s pretty simple really. As a front-rower I see it as my job to do the tough stuff down the middle and try to take the team forward.”

Rovers have called up back row forward Tyla Hepi for his Super League debut at Warrington Wolves tomorrow and have Sean Gleeson, Evarn Tuimavave and Jordan Cox available again after missing the win over Salford through illness. Forward Cory Paterson and winger Alex Brown are sidelined through injury.

Warrington ring the changes ahead of next week’s Challenge Cup semi-final, with Brad Dwyer, Glenn Riley, Tyrone McCarthy, Rhys Williams and Ben Harrison called up by coach Tony Smith.
