Rugby star suffers serious spinal injury after falling on neck

Ryan Glynn, a centre for Shaw Cross Sharks, was injured during the game on Saturday at Elland in the National Conference League.

The former Dewsbury Rams player and Bradford Bulls academy graduate came down awkwardly on the back of his neck following a legal tackle in the last few minutes, club secretary Benny Richardson said.

Mr Richardson said in an online post: “Unfortunately I have to report a serious spinal injury to our star player, Ryan Glynn.

“Ryan is currently in hospital awaiting surgery on his neck and spine.

“Our thoughts are with him and his family at this dreadful time.”

Speaking last night, Mr Richardson said the incident was a ”really unfortunate accident”, which happened when there was just 11 minutes left to play.

Glynn, who is in his 20s, is 
being treated at a hospital in Sheffield.

He suffered a dislocated vertebrae and was due to have an operation to put him in traction.

In the meantime a weighted brace has been fitted in an attempt to pull the dislocated vertebrae back into line.

It is understood further operations could also be needed.

Mr Richardson said he “cannot really say” what the long term effects on the player’s health and career would be.

But he admitted: “It’s going to be a lengthy job”.

He added the club was keen to thank Elland rugby club and the “superb” ambulance service for their help.

Shaw Cross Sharks are now 
raising funds to support Glynn and his family, and are urging rugby fans across the region to do their bit.

Rugby league memorabilia is already being gathered for raffle and auction.

“What I am absolutely sure of is that Ryan will fight this injury and I am also certain that the rugby league community will support Ryan,” Mr Richardson said.
