South Wales 10 Keighley Cougars 48: Lawton off target but Cougars romp home

Keighley cruised to a win in South Wales but will go aware knowing it could have been more.

Former Scorpion Samir Tahraoui was sent off for throwing a punch and kicker Danny Lawton missed six out of 10 conversions.

Keighley took the lead on three minutes after Josh Guzdek was given too much space to run through before Olly Pursglove opened up a gap for Guzdek to run under the sticks. Lawton converted twice.

Two of Keighley’s Jamaican internationals teamed up for the third with Hamish Barnes setting up Paul White.

Scorpions hit back after Ian Newbury was put through on the half hour. Emanuelli converted.

The red card wasn’t long before the interval but there was still time for Keighley to create another chance, player coach Paul March kicking a 40-20 but White dropped the ball. Gudzek went in for his hat-trick early in the second half. Lawton converted.

Scorpions struck back through Connor Farrer going over from dummy half. Emanuelli’s conversion attempt hit the post.

After that it was all Cougars. Andy Gabriel went over in the corner twice in the space of three minutes. Lawton missed both kicks but added the extras when Paul White was put over in the opposite corner. Olly Pursglove’s effort made the score 40-10.

The Barnes-White combination struck again for Keighley’s ninth and there was still time for Gabriel to waltz over for his hat-trick with Lawton’s kick short.
