Success in genes for breeders

Two Yorkshire farmers have won top honours for genetic improvement of their sheep.

For the second year running, George Fell of Thorganby, near York, wins the Eblex Most Progressive Flock Award for the Meatlinc breed, based on recorded improvement in Estimated Breeding Values – a measure of the commercial meat potential in the animals.

Mr Fell's grandfather, Henry, who still farms in North Lincs, started developing the Meatlinc from a mix of British and French breeds 50 years ago.

John Key has won a Most Progressive Flock Award for his Suffolks on LFA land at Stockbridge, near Sheffield. He established his Midhope Flock in 1982.
