Swinton Lions 36 Doncaster 30: Miller takes positives from Doncaster loss

DONCASTER coach Tony Miller said he was pleased with his side's progress despite a sixth successive defeat.

Miller's misfiring side have yet to win this season – and yesterday suffered their third defeat in the Co-operative Championship One, this time away to early high-fliers Swinton Lions.

Substitute Paul Shaw, Danny Allan, Nick Cooper and Tommy Griffiths all scored a try each for the visitors at Park Lane, while Lee Gomersall bagged a brace.

But a late try from Dana Wilson upset the visitors after a battling performance on the road, with six successful kicks from Gavin Dodds having eventually proved the difference between the two sides as they both scored six tries each in a gripping contest.

Simon Brown also weighed in with three goals for Doncaster, but it was not enough for Miller's charges who held the Lions

12-all at half-time, before a stirring second-half fightback was just not enough.

"I thought we played well in the second half," reflected Miller.

"We got back into the game and they were hanging on at the end, but I'm pleased with the progress we've made. We have to be patient."

Tries from Andrew Isherwood and Richie Hawkyard were cancelled out by Shaw and Allan.

After the break, the Lions powered ahead with tries from Anthony Stewart, Sam Reay and Lee Wingfield.

Griffiths and Cooper kept Doncaster in sight, Wilson edged the Lions further ahead, but Gomersall set up a dramatic finish with two fine tries.
