Sykes puts sickening injury to one side to help Wildcats find their form

IT is just typical of a rugby league player when Paul Sykes describes his suspected fractured skull as being “just a bit squishy.”

The Wakefield Trinity Wildcats stand-off returns to action tonight in the televised game at Widnes Vikings less than a fortnight after taking a heavy bang to his head against Warrington.

“I went a bit dizzy and just carried on,” he told the Yorkshire Post.

“I told the doc it was just a bit of a dint. It was a bit squishy, that’s all.

“But I went to A&E for a CAT scan and was waiting ages.

People there were saying it was a depressed fracture so I thought I’d be out for a fair few weeks.

“But our doc went over to get the notes later on and he knows the specialist.

“He says it is just a dint, a bit of bone marrow pushed in, but it’s back out now and I passed the ‘head’ test so I’m ready to play.

“I was rested last week anyway for the Challenge Cup game against Hemel Stags so that gave me a little extra time and I’m looking forward to getting back out there.”

It is good news for Wakefield too as, for all Australian star Timmy Smith gets most of their headlines, his half-back partner is similarly integral for hopes of reviving their campaign.

Trinity have just three wins so far and know victory tonight – which will see them leapfrog Widnes Vikings into 10th spot – is crucial if they are to stay in touch with the play-offs.

“We need a win regardless of who we’re playing,” admitted ex-England international Sykes.

“We’ve been playing pretty well but have just been leaking too many points.

“We’ve been working on tightening that up and sorting our discipline too as there’s been too many penalties.

“Personally, I’ve not played on Widnes’s artificial pitch before but I’d rather have a fast surface like that than a muddy pitch any day. With Widnes we know everything goes through Kev Brown and Gaz Hock.

“We need to be on guard against those two, take no shows and then just look to pick them up.

“We’re not far away, though, having pushed top sides like Huddersfield, Leeds and Catalan close. We just have to tighten up.”
