Teenagers are challenged by Radford to bulk up

HULL FC head coach Lee Radford welcomed the appearance of two 17 year-olds in his side yesterday – but then told them to bulk up fast.

Scrum-half Harry Tyson-Wilson came off the bench for his debut in the 38-28 loss at Huddersfield Giants and centre Jack Logan made only his second appearance at first-team level.

Each acquitted himself well
although they were soon given an insight into Super League’s physicality.

Radford said: “It was a massive advertisement for the pair of them that they need to live in the gym in pre-season.

“Harry has got some real football in him. You could see him skipping from one side of the field to the other and he loves having the ball in his hand.

“His challenge now is to physically develop which he will as he’s only 17. He’s still got plenty of testosterone running around his lower region so he’s going to develop naturally, which is good. He is going to be a player.

“And Jack Logan was playing against some top class centres like Aaron Murphy. He now knows where he needs to get to and what he needs to do.”

The defeat leaves Hull marooned in 12th but Radford was pleased with the effort from his side who led 18-4 at one point in the first half.

“They had a go, and again it was just a couple of mentally soft decisions that cost us,” he added.

“To get that with this group, I’m alright with, knowing full well that we’ll be better equipped next time around (in 2015).

“There was only 10 points in it and they’re sat fifth, so there’s not a massive gulf there.

“The real turning point was when (Jordan) Rankin goes to keep the ball alive and they go down the other end and score.

“They scored again quickfire after that, and psychologically that was tough to take.

“Everyone knows where we are is disappointing.”
