Trinity stalwart gets testimonial chance

WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats captain Jason Demetriou has been granted a three-month Testimonial by the RFL in recognition of more than 10 years service to the game in the UK, writes Dave Craven.

The popular Australian, 34, launched his British career with Lancashire Lynx before playing with Rochdale and Widnes ahead of joining Wildcats in 2004.

Loose forward Demetriou, who has played 276 games, will kick-off his Testimonial in mid-May.

His major progress into a top-ranked Super League player has been marked by two major attributes – his dedication to preparation and performance to maximise his talents and loyalty to the Wildcats during traumatic times on and off the field.

Coach John Kear admits Demetriou has been outstanding for Wakefield.

"My arrival at Belle Vue as head coach of Wakefield in 2006 co-incided with six Super League matches remaining and the club on the precipice of relegation," he recalled.

"As club captain, Jason Demetriou stepped forward to be my first lieutenant as I strove to inject hope and determination into the ranks in a successful campaign to stave off relegation.

"Since then, Jason has continually led his troops through the challenge of establishing the Wildcats as a genuine Super League force despite the constraints of a lower salary cap budget."
