An uncanny success at Swaledale ram show and sale

John and Claire Mason of Embsay added to their trophy cabinet by exhibiting the champion at the annual evening show and sale of Swaledale rams at Skipton.

Their five-shear ram, Ghyll House Uncanny, bred near Appleby by John Richardson, was offered for new pastures after four seasons with the Masons and was bought by show judge Robin Jackson of Blubberhouses for 700gns.

Roy Nelson of Bordley had the reserve champion in Monday's competition, a shearling ram, but the satisfaction of getting best price of the day, 950 gns, from R & A White of Bamford, Derbyshire.

Kevin Huck, also of Bordley, sold a shearling for the second highest price in show, 900gns, to Stephen Towler, Malham Moor.

Shearling rams averaged 308.51 and aged rams 303.78.

The annual ram show and sale at Bakewell saw shearling Texels averaging

274 and reaching 840; Suffolks averaging 360 and reaching 780; and Charollais averaging 233 and reaching 500.
