Wakefield Trinity Wildcats: Outlook is good under new coach Chester says playmaker Miller

Chester took charge for the first time in Friday night’s 22-4 loss at Hull FC having only been appointed barely 48 hours previously.

He replaced Brian Smith, the veteran Australian who quit after suffering four defeats from the West Yorkshire club’s opening five games, and will this morning get to work in earnest to try and lift Trinity away from the wrong end of the Super League table.

On Good Friday, Wakefield host Huddersfield Giants, who have endured a difficult start themselves, and then head to defending champions Leeds Rhinos on Easter Monday. Wildcats follow the Easter double header with a home clash against Salford Red Devils on April 2.

Although they lacked the requisite class with ball in hand to achieve victory, there was plenty of positive signs from Trinity at the KC Stadium and they were also unfortunate to receive some dismal calls from the officials that saw them concede two tries at critical periods.

Miller, the Australian half-back who signed ahead of last season after an 18-month spell with Hull, admitted: “The effort was there which was good.

“We’ve had a tough couple of weeks but things have settled down now and the effort was there so that’s all you can ask for really.

“There’s the busy Easter period coming up.

“And and if we can pick up a couple of wins in a row it can turn our season around.

“That’s what we’re looking to do.”

Chester was relieved of duties at Hull KR earlier this season ironically after Wakefield Wildcats picked up their solitary win of the season so far against them.

But on the 38-year-old, who hails from Wakefield, Miller added: “He’s been really good.

“He’d not done an awful lot before the Hull game as he’d only been around a couple of days.

“But he’s come in and all the boys have responded really well and we’re now looking forward to working this week with him ahead of that Huddersfield game.”

Miller showed signs of his own quality against Hull, with whom he appeared in the 2013 Challenge Cup final, producing a couple of threatening line-breaks and some telling kicks, too. “It was god to make a couple of breaks,” admitted the 23-year-old former Wests Tigers prodigy.

“But I was just happy that the team, with 20 minutes of the match to go, were somewhat in with a chance of still winning the game. That’s the main thing and it’s something to build on.”

Wakefield will have Jason Walton back for Friday’s game after he served a one-game ban against Hull .

However, fellow forward Tinirau Arona completes his two-match suspension versus Huddersfield.
